Young Tom Scoops Yorkshire Bank Prize
17 September 2013
Young Gloucestershire batsman Tom Smith has been named Player-of-the-Season by Under-17 League sponsors Yorkshire Bank.
The 17-year-old, from Chepstow, will collect his award from England captain Alastair Cook at Lord's on September 21st when the Yorkshire Bank 40 final between Nottinghamshire and Glamorgan will be played.
As captain, Tom, namesake of the left-srm spinner on loan to the club from Middlesex, led Gloucestershire Under-17s to the National KO Championship, which already meant sponsors tickets for the YB40 final.
Despite being sidelined with injury for a short mid-season spell, Tom amassed 855 runs for Clifton College, including three hundreds. His Gloucestershire Under-17s tally for the season is 642 runs in just seven innings, which included no fewer than five centuries and a top score of 199 not out.
Gloucestershire Academy Director Owen Dawkins said: "It is fantastic achievement for Tom, who has performed consistently for both Gloucestershire Under 17s and Clifton College
"He has come through our club's age-group system since Under-11 level. I'm sure the YB40 final will be a very memorable day for him"
