Young batsmen to benefit from India experience

Three potential Gloucestershire players of the future will put their skills to the test during an 11 day trip to India.
Academy batsman Jordan Garrett (Great and Little Tew, Oxon) and Emerging Player Programme (EPP) pair Matt Brewer (Bristol CC) and Joe Dryell (pictured) (Downend) will train at the Global Cricket School in Mumbai, following in the footsteps of a number of the current first team squad.
Chris Dent, Ian Cockbain, Jack Taylor, Craig Miles, Matt Taylor and Miles Hammond are just some of the players who have benefited from the experience in the past.
Gloucestershire Academy director Owen Dawkins, who is accompanying the players on the trip said: “It is a tough experience but a great development opportunity for them.
“They will have the chance to bat all day against the local bowlers and develop their skills on surfaces that are completely different to what they are used to.
“A lot of our lads have gone through this now and it has given them a fresh perspective on how the game is played and what they need to do to be successful in different conditions.”
As well as Gloucestershire’s young players the Global Cricket School has been used by the England Lions, Under 19s, MCC Young Cricketers and a number of other county sides.
During their stay there, Jordan, Joe and Matt will have the opportunity to work with top local coaches that in the past have included the likes of India legend VVS Laxman and Pakistan batsman Hanif Mohammed.
Owen said: “As well as being a good opportunity for the players it is also a great chance for me and Steve Cashmore (Second XI assistant coach) to learn from the coaches out there.”
The three batsmen going to India are among a number of young Gloucestershire players who are touring overseas this winter.
Academy players Brandon Allen and Ben Charlewsorth are touring the Caribbean with their school – St Edwards, while Dominic Hooper (Claverham) and Josh Smith (Lansdown) head to Sri Lanka with a Gloucestershire Cricket Board county junior squad.
In addition to these players, Academy wicketkeeper Patrick Grieshaber has spent the winter playing in Australia.
