Will Strikes Twice On Good Day For Bowlers
21 March 2014
Will Gidman claimed 2-28 from 12 lively overs before Glamorgan declared on 210-6 on the second day of the two-day friendly at Cardiff.
That gave the hosts a first innings lead of 99. Gloucestershire had made 36-2 in their second innings when bad light brought the match to an end.
A useful day's preparation for the new season was marred sightly for Gloucestershire when Ian Saxelby pulled out of his run-up for the sixth delivery of his third over, having taken the new ball with Gidman.
Skipper Hamish Marshall had to complete the over. Saxelby, who has worked so hard to overcome shoulder and knee problems, did not bowl again, but the problem is not thought to be serious..
Hamish later told this website: “Ian just felt a niggle in a leg, which is not connected to his previous injuries. He came off as a precaution.
“He and Will had set the standard for a good day for our bowlers with their opening overs. The others also did well and it was a good day’s work-out for them.”
After the first day had been curtailed by rain, Gloucestershire declared on their overnight total of 111-3.
With the Glamorgan score on six Gidman made the breakthrough as Gareth Rees edged into wicketkeeper Gareth Roderick's gloves.
Three balls later Will struck again as Stewart Walters departed lbw for a duck. Will Bragg and Ben Wright took the total to 41 before the latter edged Liam Norwell, who claimed 1-25 from 12 overs, to Chris Dent at second slip and fell for five.
Bragg brought up the fifty by leg-glancing Gidman and Chris Cooke (42) helped the opener add 77 in 20 overs for the fourth wicket. Bragg completed his half-century from 98 balls.
Cooke was trapped leg before by Craig Miles, whose 12 overs saw him take 1-62. Three ball later Bragg also departed lbw for 72 as Matt Taylor (1-42 from 11 overs) gained his only victim to leave Glamorgan on 122-5.
Jim Allenby and Mark Wallace added 36 in attractive style before Wallace advanced down the wicket to Jack Taylor 91-46 from 11 overs) and was stumped by Roderick.
Allenby went on to make 54 not out off 69 balls, with 6 fours and 2 sixes before Glamorgan closed their innings at the tea interval.
That gave Gloucestershire time for more batting practice. They lost Will Tavare for 11 and Matt Taylor for a duck in slipping to 18-2 before Dent (20 not out) and Will Gidman (4 not out) took the total to 36-2 when stumps were drawn shortly after 5pm.
