Will Stars With Bat As Yorkshire Wilt

29 July 2014

Will Gidman hit an unbeaten 71 as Gloucestershire defied the odds to pull off a memorable three-wicket victory over Yorkshire at Headingley in the Royal London One-Day Cup.

The all-rounder shared a key seventh-wicket stand of 69 in 13.2 overs with Jack Taylor, who made 38, as the visitors reached their target of 193 to win with more than four overs remaining.

Gloucestershire had looked in trouble at 83-6 in reply to Yorkshire's 192 all out. But Will hit 10 fours in his 89-ball innings, while Jack smacked a six and 3 fours in facing just 39 deliveries.

The pair had earlier taken two wickets each to help bowl the hosts out in just 41.4 overs. Will sent back Alex Lees and former Gloucestershire team-mate Kane Williamson at the top of the order for figures of 2-33 from eight overs.

Jack finished off the innings by dismissing Jack Leaning and Jack Brooks with successive deliveries and returned 2-33 from 6.4 overs.

David Payne was the most successful bowler. The left-arm seamer claimed the key wickets of Adam Lyth, Andrew Gale and Jonny Bairstow to finish with 3-31 from eight overs.

Michael Klinger hit 37 at the start of Gloucestershire's reply, but the rest of the top order were unable to make an impact.

After the game the captain told this website: "David Payne and Will Gidman bowled particularly well with the new ball and the pitch did a bit more than we expected, which is why it was a low scoring game.

"Our bowling and fielding as a whole was a huge improvement on the previous game. There was a bit of turn for Jack Taylor and he made the most of it.

"We got off to a decent start in our reply, but a few wickets fell quickly when I got out and it took a superb effort from Will Gidman to see us home.

"His partnership with Jack was excellent and after it ended he stuck in there to see us over the line."

Director of Cricket John Bracewell said: "The wicket was quite slow and holding a bit and the match turned into a bit of a scrap.

"Gidman and Payne hit the right areas and found the correct length and took wickets up front.

"Leaning and Rashid put on a good partnership which was bound to happen and we faced a respectable but achievable total.

"We always said this could be a competition for Will Gidman because 50-overs cricket suits his bowling and he showed that it does.

"It was good to beat a class side like Yorkshire who have some excellent outstanding cricketers. To tip them over on their home turf is a good effort."

The result means Gloucestershire are one of seven teams to have two points in Group A of the Royal London Cup, each having played two games, apart from Essex, who have a match in hand.

The next game is against Hampshire at Bristol on Thursday, 10.30am start.
