Will Skittles Leicestershire With Career Best

3 September 2013

Will Gidman put a season of frustration behind him to return career-best figures of 6-15 on the opening day of the LV=County Championship match against Leicestershire at Bristol.

Hampered by injury earlier in the season, Will was finally rewarded for adhering to the tenets of line and length as Gloucestershire bowled out the visitors for 117 and then reached 210-4 to establish a first-innings lead of 93.

Having eclipsed his previous best return of 6-92 against Derbyshire at Derby in 2011, a delighted Will told this website: “I’m absolutely thrilled.

“Bowling during the last three or four weeks on flat pitches has been hard work, so to get some wickets today is really pleasing and is the result of some hard work put in over the last month.

“It has been a frustrating summer for me. I’m a rhythm bowler and the season has been stop-start for me. I had a month out injured and then missed out on the Twenty20s, which meant I had another break from cricket.

“It’s been tough and I’ve found it hard to find a rhythm, but I’ve worked hard and got my rewards.”

Will was full of praise for teenage left arm seamer Matt Taylor, who made his first-class debut and was awarded his county cap.

He said: “You have to mention Matt on his debut. He bowled a beautiful spell from the Pavilion end and it was really pleasing for him to start so well in Championship cricket.”

Will says the target on the second day will be to bat for as long as possible and extend the lead.

He said: “We cannot afford to sit back on our laurels, we have to keep pushing hard. The aim is to bat for as long as possible and wear away the wicket.”
