Will Puts Pressure On Leicestershire

1 May 2013

Will Gidman impressed with bat and ball as Gloucestershire moved into a strong position on the second day of the LV=County Championship match with Leicestershire at Grace Road.

First the all-rounder hit 52 off just 60 balls, with 8 fours, to help his side to 280 all out, a lead of 30. Jack Taylor made an undefeated 61and there was a half-century for Benny Howell to follow his five wickets in the Leicestershire first innings.

When the home side batted again Will struck twice in the opening five overs, removing openers Michael Thornely and Niall O'Brien with only 17 runs on the board.

Leicestershire closed on 32-2, leading by just two runs, and Gidman had figures of 2-9 from five overs.

Gloucestershire had begin the day on 31-2 in reply to 250 and soon plunged into trouble as skipper Michael Klinger, nightwatchman David Payne and Alex Gidman all fell cheaply to make it 46-5.

Hamish Marshall then helped Howell steady the ship, contributing 47, including 6 fours, to a sixth-wicket stand of 61. As on the previous day the bowlers found it more difficult when the shine went off the ball.

Will Gidman added a further 67 with the patient Howell before losing his wicket with the total on 174 and it was 214-8 when Howell was finally dismissed, having batted three hours and 24 minutes for his 52. He hit 2 sixes and one other boundary.

When Cameron Herring was out in was 229-9 and Gloucestershire looked like conceding a first innings deficit. But Craig Miles joined Taylor in a last wicket partnership of 51 to frustrate the hosts.

Miles made 23, while Taylor underlined his growing ability as a batsman by hitting 5 fours and a six in his 69-ball innings.
