Will Porterfield signs extension as Glos Assistant Coach
8 December 2022
Will Porterfield has signed a contract extension at Gloucestershire Cricket as he continues in his role as Assistant Coach Batting and Fielding.
The 38-year-old impressed during a stint at The Shire last season, after he joined Dale Benkenstein’s coaching staff in early 2022 on a consultancy basis.
A former Ireland international, Will made more than 200 appearances for his country between 2006 and 2022, scoring around 5,500 runs in the process. The talented batter is also a former Gloucestershire player and between 2008 and 2010, he made 81 appearances across all three formats for The Shire.
In 29 First-Class appearances for Gloucestershire, Will scored 1635 runs at an average of 30.84. He also played in 30 List A matches for The Shire, scoring 947 runs at 33.82, and made 22 T20 appearances in which he scored 511 runs at 24.33.
Speaking of his delight at extending his time in the Glos coaching set-up, Will said: “Going from retiring from cricket this year to working with Glos has been a great opportunity for me. To extend my contract is really exciting on my part, it’s brilliant to be back at the club where I began by journey in County Cricket. I enjoyed three great years here as a player, so to be back as a coach is fantastic.
“Working under the Head Coach has been great so far, we’ve gelled together nicely and have a good working relationship. We’ve got an exciting young squad, there’s a lot of talent there, and that’s really encouraging as we look to build on some good performances at the back end of last season.”
Will’s extension as Assistant Coach in a two-year agreement comes after the appointment of Robbie Joseph as Lead Bowling Coach in November.
Steve Snell, Performance Director at Gloucestershire Cricket, added: “I’m really pleased Will has extended his contract for the next two years. Will made a significant contribution last season and the players absolutely loved his enthusiasm, knowledge and cricketing awareness. Will’s role will see him working not only with the professional staff, but also with our academy players this winter. He has vast experience in domestic and international cricket and I am positive he will have an outstanding impact across the club.
“Will is extremely enthusiastic about developing his own coaching and I think he has a hugely exciting future in the space. I am certain that he is an excellent addition to our coaching staff.”
