Will And Matt Among The Wickets

14 April 2014

Will Gidman (pictured) and Matt Taylor claimed four wickets each on an otherwise disappointing second day of the LV=County Championship match with Hampshire at Bristol’

It began with Gloucestershire losing their last five second innings wickets for just 12 runs from an overnight 292-5 and ended with Hampshire on 417-9, leading by 113.

Gidman was the pick of the Gloucestershire attack with figures of 4-66 from 20 overs, while left-armer Taylor returned a career-best 4-75 from 19 overs.

James Vince led the way for Hampshire with 144, sharing a seventh-wicket stand of 155 with wicketkeeper Adam Wheater, who ended the day unbeaten on 81.

Hampshire were 213-6 at one point, still trailing by 91, but dominated the final session to move into a strong position.

At the close Gloucestershire skipper Michael Klinger told this website: “While two or three of our bowlers did a good job, we were not effective enough as a unit.

“Hampshire’s attack showed at the start of the day that there was still something in the pitch and they got the ball to swing.

“We did the same in spells and were rewarded with wickets. But in between there were too many four balls – and on both sides of the wicket which made it difficult for me to close one side down.

"I had to use the guys who bowled well more than was ideal. Will Gidman was twice warned for running on the pitch by the umpire at the end of the day, which is why I took him out of the attack.

“Losing five wickets for 12 runs at the start of the day and three for ten runs on the opening day made it hard to gain control of the match.

“Will Tavare played tremendously well and the we felt we had the batsmen in our lower order to support him. Unfortunately, they were not able to do that today.

“Having said all that, we certainly still feel we can win the game. We need to get the final wicket quickly and then build a lead.

“The pitch still makes it necessary to be careful as a batsman for your first 25 or 30 balls, but it is also possible to score quickly.”

Michael revealed that Ian Saxelby had been left out of the side because it was felt he needed one more warm-up game to achieve the necessary level of form or fitness.

"Ian will get that in the second XI and should be available for our next Championship fixture," said the skipper.
