Michael Klinger admitted there were lessons to be learned after Gloucestershire’s opening LV=County Championship match ended in an eight-wicket defeat by Hampshire at Bristol.
A century from Michael Carberry and a hard-hitting fifty from James Vince saw the visitors to a target of 215 before tea on the final afternoon.
Hamish Marshall had been last man out for 94 in Gloucestershire’s second innings, adding 24 with Matt Taylor at the start of the day before the team were bowled out for 332.
It didn’t prove enough and Klinger will be looking for improvements in the batting and bowling departments when his side start their second game against Glamorgan at Cardiff on Sunday.
Michael told this website: “We lost wickets in clusters twice in our first innings, three for ten runs on day one and five for 12 at the beginning of day two.
“You can’t hope to control games if that happens. Then we didn’t bowl well enough as a unit and allowed Hampshire to score too quickly.
"That is where the game got away from us. Losing quick wickets led to a momentum shift after what had been a pretty good first day for us. We were always playing catch-up from then onwards.
"It might have been a different story had I held on to a catch off Carberry.
"Another wicket then might have put them under pressure and changed the game. But he batted really well after that and took it away from us quickly.
“Some of the bowlers did well, but they need to be more consistent as a group. Hamish Marshall did a great job keeping us in the game on day three, Alex Gidman got some runs and David Payne showed what he is capable of with the bat.
“Overall we have some things to work on and need to improve. It is early days and there were some good things to take from the game.”
Will Gidman and Matt Taylor were the final day wicket-takers. Hampshire took 24 points from the game to Gloucestershire’s six.
