We Missed An Opportunity - Alex

11 September 2012

Alex Gidman felt his side had missed a golden opportunity to impose themselves on the final LV-County Championship match of the season during an even opening day against Leicestershire at Grace Road.

After winning the toss the visitors were bowled out for a disappointing 234, Ian Cockbain top-scoring with 48 and Hamish Marshall contributing 47.

By the close, Leicestershire had replied with 94-3, Will Gidman claiming two of the wickets, and the game looked evenly poised.

But Alex was far from satisfied, telling this website: "We were poor today and slipped below the standards we expect of ourselves.

"It was an important toss to win because the pitch will deteriorate. We had a great chance to put serious runs on the board and take control of the game.

"But we didn't apply ourselves properly and the opportunity has been lost. We are still well in the game, but our position should be better.

"If we win the first session tomorrow we can still make it very tough for Leicestershire because batting last on this pitch won't be easy.

"But we need to have a better day than today. If we do there is a lot of cricket left to be played and we can still come out on top."
