We made the right decision, says skipper Klinger

7 June 2013

Gloucestershire captain Michael Klinger believes it was the right decision not to declare behind Glamorgan's first innings of 448 in the County Championship Division Two game at Bristol and set up the possibility of a contrived finish on the final day.

Instead, Gloucestershire will attempt to establish a lead of at least 100 over the Welsh county and then put them under pressure when they bat again.

At stumps on a third day in which 21 overs were lost to rain, Gloucestershire held a lead of eight runs after reaching 456-4, thanks mainly to 142 from Klinger, 113 from Alex Gidman and 82 from Dan Housego.

Klinger said: "We're pleased with the decision we made. We considered declaring behind if we didn't start the day well and weren't scoring at a decent rate.

"But we got into a position to really strike out and build a lead. Unfortunately, the overs we lost to rain prevented us getiing a lead of least 70 or 80 tonight.

"We still have a chance of winning the game. We'll muster up whatever lead we can and our bowlers should be pretty fresh as they've had almost two days off."

Klinger also praised Gidman, who continued his fine form with a century from just 117 deliveries. He said: "Alex had been consistently good all season. His last three hits, in particular, have been excellent."
