We Have To Learn Quickly From This - Alex

6 April 2012

Alex Gidman admitted his Gloucestershire team had been taught some harsh lessons on a one-sided second day of the LV County Championship match with Essex at Chelmsford.

The visitors lost 15 wickets before bad light brought a merciful close, being bowled out for 180 in their first innings in reply to 364 and then slumping to 55-5 after following on.

Only Chris Dent with 38 and Dan Housego, who hit 39, offered much resistance in the first innings as David Masters, Maurice Chambers and Tymal Mills grabbed three wickets each.

Masters then claimed two more victims and Graham Napier three as Gloucestershire's top order were blown away in just 22 overs.

At the close Alex Gidman told this website: "It has been a very tough day for us with some excellent bowling by Essex and, in truth, some tentative batting on our part.

"The ball has seamed around a lot and the Essex bowlers put it in the right place to apply maximum pressure, something we didn't do enough on the opening day.

"It goes without saying that it is going to be very difficult to get anything out of the match now. But there is an opportunity for our remaining batsmen to spend some time at the crease tomorrow, which could prove valuable.

"We have to learn quickly from the past two days and if we do we can improve rapidly. It is very early in the season and we know we are a young side who need to sometimes accept some harsh lessons."
