Tye picked for World T20 and IPL

9 February 2016

Andrew Tye will bring both international and IPL experience to Gloucestershire’s NatWest T20 Blast campaign after being picked to play in two of the biggest competitions in world cricket.

The 29-year-old paceman has made the Australia squad for the World T20 in March and been snapped up by the Gujarat Lions in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

He will link up with his new team mates at the Bristol County Ground following the conclusion of the IPL in May. To buy tickets to watch him in action click here.

Tye - who made his international debut in the recent T20 series against India – was one of the stars of Big Bash League 5, taking 13 wickets for Perth Scorchers and being named in the team of the tournament.

His impressive form led to the Lions spending US$103,000 to secure his services at the 2016 IPL auction.

Speaking to the official Scorchers website after Australia’s 15-man squad was announced, Tye said: “You go out there every game trying to do the best you can and some games you do well, some you don’t. The selectors obviously thought I’d done well in the games and with the chances I’ve had and I’m eternally grateful to them.”

Despite not playing a game for the Chennai Super Kings in the 2015 IPL, Andrew says that being part of the squad will stand him in good stead for the World T20 – which is being held in India.

He said: “Just being around the team, learning in those environments and bowling to some of the best players in the world was unbelievable. It really gave me a good understanding of how to bowl in those conditions.

“Some of that experience will help benefit me going into the World Cup.”

While Tye was hotly-tipped for selection, he is part of a 15-man Australia World T20 squad that contains a number of surprises.

Test and One-Day captain Steve Smith takes over the reins from Aaron Finch - who is battling to be fit -  while wicketkeeper Peter Nevil replaces Mathew Wade despite never having played white ball cricket for his country.

In total 10 of the 15 players picked for the India T20 series miss out,  while left arm spinner Ashton Agar is selected for the first time.

Much to the bafflement of Gloucestershire fans, prolific batsman Michael Klinger has once again been overlooked despite an incredible last 18 months where he has continued to dominate attacks on both sides of the world.

Australia’s first game is against New Zealand on March 17, for the full squad see below:
