Tribute to Robbie Clifton
17 May 2012
It is with great sadness that Gloucestershire County Cricket Club announces the death of Robbie Clifton, a long-standing member of the Club, who passed away on 13 May. His funeral will take place at South Bristol Crematorium at 3.30 pm on Tuesday 22nd May.
A tribute from Club Chairman, Rex Body:
I first met Robbie some fifteen years ago. I was immediately struck by his great enthusiasm and love for the Club and indeed, for cricket in general. As I got to know him better this view did not change and I appreciated even more his allegiance to the Club. This was obvious, for example, in the way he would welcome the new members he met and tried to make them feel part of “the family”.
Robbie was a tireless worker for GCCC over many years: first in the Jessop Tavern, then as steward for the Beaufort Club and even, during one season, standing in as scorer.
Sadly, ill health in recent years curtailed some activities - much to his annoyance – but he continued to fully support events, lunches and dinners. I was privileged to be his guest on many occasions at Charity dinners at the Marriot and Robbie will be sadly missed by all the regulars at his table.
Sitting in his favourite place in the Hammond Bar with his many friends, Robbie always had amusing anecdotes to tell. He was also not slow to give you his very honest views on what was happening in the club at any one time and in cricket generally. Robbie was always keen to give helpful advice; strangely, I found this increased as soon as I became Chairman!
Robbie, I will miss your wit, your smile and your friendship. For so many of us, looking through the window into the Hammond Bar will never be the same.
