Tom Smith signs one-year extension at Gloucestershire until 2024

15 March 2023

Long-serving Gloucestershire spinner Tom Smith has signed a one-year contract extension with the Club until 2024.

2022 marked ten seasons in Gloucestershire colours for Smith as he continued to be an important component of Shire’s One Day and T20 setups.

Smith took fifteen wickets in last year’s Vitality Blast campaign leaving him second in the Club’s 2022 T20 wicket-taking chart. Ten more followed in the Royal London Cup as Glos narrowly missed out on a quarter-final place.

A level 4 qualified coach, Smith has also begun his coaching journey with the Club as he will continue to assist Gloucestershire's coaching network in First XI, Second XI and Academy sessions.

Speaking about the deal that will extend his Gloucestershire stay to twelve years, Smith said:

I feel very honoured to have extended my contract at this great Club. The opportunity to continue playing whilst developing as a coach is a very exciting phase of my career and one that I am very grateful for.

I would also like to thank Steve Snell and Dale Benkenstein for providing me the opportunities within the coaching department and allowing me to apply my learning from my level 4 coaching course.

It is a really exciting time for this group of players and I can’t wait for the 2023 season to begin.

Smith’s 124 T20 wickets place him third on the all-time list of Gloucestershire wicket-takers in the shortest format, a tally he will look to add to in the 2023 season.

On Smith’s contract extension, Head Coach at Gloucestershire Cricket, Dale Benkenstein, said:

“It’s great to have Tom’s commitment for the next few seasons and experience around the club from a spin bowling point of view. His mentoring is important for all our young spinners and to Zafar Gohar as a left-arm spinner also.

“His value is not only on the playing field but off the field too so it’s great to have him extend his contract with the Club.”

Tom Smith is sponsored by Woosh.
