David Payne believes Gloucestershire’s bowling in the middle overs could prove the key to beating Surrey in the Royal London One-Day Cup.
Looking ahead to the final at Lord’s 24-year-old paceman - who was picked as “one to watch” in the competition by England selector Angus Fraser – talks about his role in the team, how he will deal with the pressure of a first final and the bowling attack as a whole.

On his own form David said: “It’s been a bit of a mixed bag but where the team are is much more important than any personal achievements.”
On the pressure of bowling at the death: “It can get a bit nervy depending on who is at the other end. I am used to it now and like taking the responsibility for the team.”
On the bowling attack: “It’s a very strong one, we’ve got a lot of variation. Our middle overs is our key - Benny (Howell), Jack (Taylor), Smudge (Tom Smith) – what they do. It’s where we really put a squeeze on and really pressure teams.
“Our death has been a bit hit and miss but when it comes off it is as good as anyone.”
On preparing for Surrey’s top order including the likes of Kumar Sangakarra and Jason Roy: “We will certainly do our research on them and I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t already thought about how I’m going to bowl to them. When it comes to game day you just try to treat it like any other game, as any other batter stood down the other end.”
