Teams unveiled for Cheltenham Festival Ten10 Summer Smash

24 July 2014

Gloucestershire Cricket legend Mark Alleyne will be lining up against former Gloucester Rugby players and the best club cricketers in the county at the first ever Ten 10 Summer Smash competition on Friday (July 25).

The club’s most successful captain will lead an all-star side that includes ex-Pakistan international Sadiq Mohammed and prolific batsman Tony Wright, in the four team tournament at the Brewin Dolphin Cheltenham Cricket Festival.

Tickets for the day are £5 per adult with free entry for Gloucestershire members and people aged 18 and under.

The gates open at 11am and the action starts at 12.30pm with a match between the Gloucestershire Old Boys and a Gloucestershire Cricket Board XI featuring the county’s best amateur players.

Also competing in the event is a Gloucester Rugby team that includes Cherry and Whites heroes Andy Deacon and Terry Fanolua and Gloucester MP Richard Graham.

The line-up is completed by a Brewin Dolphin XI starring former South Africa and Worcester back Thinus Delport and ex-England rugby player Olly Morgan.

The man behind the inaugural Summer Smash event is Gloucestershire Cricket chief executive Will Brown.

He said: “After a brilliant fortnight of cricket at Cheltenham we wanted to do something a little bit fun and different.

“It will great to see some of Gloucestershire’s former heroes back playing on the famous College Ground and I am sure it will bring back great memories for them and our supporters.

“It is great that the day is being supported by Cheltenham Cricket Festival sponsors Brewin Dolphin and by Gloucester Rugby. I have been told that both sides contain a few dark horses and I think they will surprise a few people.”

While fans are looking forward to watching the sporting celebrities in action – there is also the prospect of watching the Gloucestershire Cricket Board (GCB) ‘dream team’  - a side made up of 11 of the county’s best club cricketers.

The team will be captained by Thornbury CC Richard Trotman and features players from across the county including Lechlade skipper Joe Breet, Tom Wand and Louis Gegg from Froceester and Cheltenham CC seamer Elliott Wilson.

GCB chief executive Steve Silk said: “The day is going to be a bit of fun and provide a number of players with the opportunity to play at the historic Cheltenham Festival.

"Cricket players and supporters love this festival, so for 11 Gloucestershire recreational cricketers it provides a wonderful opportunity.

"It is also certainly an acknowledgement to these 11 players as they have been selected based on what they do week in, week out. It is a bit of fun but we’ll be going out to win it!”

Later in the evening, Brewin Dolphin are hosting a Sports Question Time at the College Ground featuring Sochi Olympic Gold Medallist, Lizzy Yarnold , Mark Alleyne, and former South Africa and Glos cricket legend Mike Procter. Thinus Delport and Grand National and Gold Cup-winning trainer Kim Bailey will also be taking part.

Tickets are £35 plus VAT (which includes a curry buffet).  The evening starts at 7.00pm and profits from the evening will be donated to LINC and Fredericks Foundation Gloucestershire.  To book call Lizzie Archer on 0117 910 8013 or email lizzie.archer@glosccc.co.uk
