Team-mates back Will Gidman for England

25 April 2014

Michael Klinger and Hamish Marshall say team-mate Will Gidman should be considered for an England call-up following his impressive start to the season.

The allrounder, 29, has starred with bat and ball in Gloucestershire’s opening two games of the LV County Championship season, including taking 6-50 at Glamorgan and scoring a half-century against Hampshire.

Speaking to BBC Gloucestershire after the draw at Glamorgan, captain Klinger said: “There's no reason why he can't play for England.

"Will is only in his mid-late twenties so he's in the prime of his career. Year after year he's taken wickets and made runs.

"Hopefully if he can do the job to someone like Alastair Cook then hopefully they'll start to look at him."

Former Durham man Will, will have the perfect chance to catch the eye of the England captain when Essex visit the County Ground for their LV Championship match starting this Sunday.

And Gidman – who took 50 wickets scored 1,115 runs in Division Two last year -  has also received the backing of batsman Hamish Marshall.

Writing in his column for the Gloucester Citizen Marshall said: “Will is one of the better all-rounders on the circuit and I'm quite surprised his name doesn't get mentioned more often with regards to England honours.

“I imagine he is the first name on our team sheet in the Championship and we're delighted to have him at Gloucestershire, but we all play this game to try to get to the highest level and it would be great for him to get that recognition.

He bowls well in any conditions and a lot of players struggle with him, so if he keeps up those standards he must have a chance.”

But speaking at the club’s media day earlier this month Will admitted that although representing England remained a dream it wasn’t something he had thought about a great deal.
