Tavare Ensures Solid Start On Second Day

8 July 2014

Will Tavare was unbeaten on 44 when rain brought a premature end to the second day of the LV=County Championship match with Hampshire at Southampton.

Gloucestershire were 94-1 in reply to 297 when the weather intervened, with no play possible after the tea interval.

Chris Dent made 30 before falling lbw to James Tomlinson, while skipper Alex Gidman was 11 not out. Tavare had faced 80 balls and hit 8 fours.

At the start of the day there had been more frustration for Gloucestershire as Tomlinson and David Balcombe extended their last wicket stand in Hampshire's first innings to 115.

The pair added a further 46 to the 69 they had put together the previous evening before Tom Smith had Tomlinson caught by David Payne for a career best 51 in his first over of the day.

Balcombe was unbeaten on 65 when the innings finally ended and Smith finished with figures of 3-30 from 13 overs. Liam Norwell's final return was 4-103 from 22 overs.

At the close, Will Tavare said:  “We had a frustrating first hour. Our bowlers put in a lot of hard work for one wicket.

''It was important we got off to a good start when we batted, but there is no doubt the momentum at that stage was with Hampshire.

''Denty and myself managed to stop that a bit and the wicket was playing well. Now we need to build on the solid start we have made.

''We need a big score to get some bonus points and I am sure we can do it. It is a good cricket wicket and there is plenty in it still for the bowlers.''
