Tavare Celebrates Milestone With Hundred

24 September 2014

Will Tavare reached 1,000 first class runs in his debut season with Gloucestershire by scoring an unbeaten century as his side dominated the second day of the LV=County Championship match with Kent at Canterbury.

Having bowled out the hosts for 164 either side of a rain interruption to claim a first innings lead of 15 runs, Gloucestershire posted 208-2 in their second innings to extend the advantage to 223.

Tavare shared an opening stand of 104 with Chris Dent, who made 47, and then added 102 for the third wicket in an unbroken partnership with Alex Gidman, who was 46 not out when bad light ended play.

When he reached 91, Will brought up his 1,000 runs for the season, a tremendous effort in his debut season of Championship cricket. He went on to reach his fourth hundred off 150 balls, with 13 fours, and ended the day 101 not out.

It was a memorable day for the 24-year-old Bristolian on the ground where his uncle, former Kent, Somerset and England batsman Chris Tavare, played most of his county cricket.

Kent had began day two on 83-4 in reply to Gloucestershire's 179, but only Sam Billings, with 73, offered much resistance to Gloucestershire's quartet of seamers.

The wickets were shared around in the innings, with Craig Miles claiming three, while there were two each for David Payne, Liam Norwell and Benny Howell, who had also been responsible for the running out of Dan Bell-Drummond on the opening day. Miles conceded only 20 runs from his 13 overs.

The current match position represents a remarkable turnaround as Gloucestershire were 62-8 at one point in their first innings.
