‘Sycle for Syd’ challenge to raise money for David Lawrence’s battle with MND

16 October 2024

Gloucestershire supporters are invited to take part in a mammoth 24 hour indoor cycling challenge to help raise money for David ‘Syd’ Lawrence’s battle with motor neurone disease (MND).

Fundraisers at the Trojan Fitness gym in Bristol, Syd’s favourite place to train, have teamed up to organise a charity cycling event in support of their beloved friend, Syd, who was diagnosed with MND in June following four months in hospital and multiple tests.

The ‘Sycle for Syd’ cycling marathon will take place at Trojan Fitness, located off South Liberty Lane, Bristol, from 9am on Saturday 9th November. The event will see fundraisers cycle the equivalent distance between Gloucestershire Cricket’s Seat Unique Stadium and Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, whom Syd made his international debut against for England at Lord’s in 1988.

The 6,525 mile distance is expected to take 22 people, cycling continuously on static bikes, around 24 hours to complete.

Matty Hudd, the owner of Trojan Fitness, is encouraging as many people as possible to visit the gym on Saturday 9th November to support Syd by either taking part in the challenge or by cheering on those giving their all to ‘Sycle for Syd’.

Matty said: “We’re going to give ourselves 24 hours to complete the challenge, which is minor when compared to what Syd and his family are going through, to generate as much money as support for Syd as we possibly can.

“We want to show people, that in a time of need, we are all there for him because he means so much to us and we want to try to support in any way we can. Syd means everything to me as a friend, he was here with me when we opened up Trojan, and to see such a strong, powerful man struck down with this disease is just so hard.

“If you’d like to join us then we’d love to have you here because we want to do everything we can to support Syd and his family.”

A former Gloucestershire player, Syd took 625 wickets in 280 matches for the club, bowling with blistering pace that earned him five Test and one ODI appearance with England, an international career that was cut short due to a career-ending knee injury vs New Zealand in 1992.

The fundraising event at Trojan Fitness is free to attend and will also raise money for Syd’s charity of choice, the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA). The fundraising event will begin and 9am on Saturday 9th November and will last approximately 24 hours.
