Students create We Are Gloucestershire sign
18 May 2016
An enormous 20m long and 2m high bright yellow sign announcing ‘We Are Gloucestershire’ has been erected inside the gates of the Brightside Ground, Bristol.
What makes this sign special is that the letters have all been created by some of the best secondary school art students in Bristol and Gloucestershire.
The project has been funded by Gloucestershire Cricket community partner Reese's.
Head of Community Engagement, Roz Hutchings said: “The large grey breeze brick walls under the apartments needed to be made more welcoming for fans as they arrive through our new entrance at the Ashley Down Road end.
“We thought this was a perfect opportunity to engage with art students in secondary schools in a cross curricular project to encourage students – who might not otherwise, get inspired by cricket. We were delighted seven schools jumped at the chance.”
The schools were sent large, plain print outs of each individual letter. They were then asked to complete the letters however they wanted – the more creative the better.
Once finished, the letters were sent to Artworks Solutions who scanned them and created the 20m long by 2m high artwork.
Roz added: “The response to the brief has been amazing. We were particularly impressed with the variety of mediums the students used - from photography to print, computer designed patterns to a simple paint and brush.
“My personal favourite was the letter ‘L’ completed by students at Cotham School. Inspired by the pattern on the seam of the cricket ball, the students actually sewed the pattern onto the letter they had painted red, using yellow wool.”
To say thanks for their hard work, the 120 pupils and teachers who’ve been involved in the project are coming to The Brightside Ground on Friday night to see the finished artwork and watch Gloucestershire’s first match under floodlights when they kick off their NatWest T20 Blast campaign against Sussex.
