South Africa Star To Coach At County Ground

29 May 2014

A small group of Gloucestershire Academy players will have the chance to take part in a Herschelle Gibbs' masterclass at the Bristol County Ground on Wednesday 4 June.

The South African star, who has played in 90 Test Matches and 248 One-Day Internationals, has agreed to hold a net session for the club’s top Academy players. Gibbs is currently in England with the Lashings touring side.

His visit to Bristol has been arranged by Gloucestershire Academy Director, Owen Dawkins, and made possible by the generous support of Max Lezar - Pension Analysis Centre.

Owen said: “It will be a privilege for a select group of our Academy batsmen to have the chance to learn from such a player as Herschelle.

“We are delighted that he has agreed to come to the Bristol County Ground for a morning and work with them. I am sure it will be a fantastic experience for the players involved.”

Gibbs has scored two Test double centuries in his prolific career, which has seen him mount up more than 6,000 Test run and more than 8,000 in one-day internationals. He is one of only three batsmen in the history of One-Day Internationals to score a century in three successive innings. The others are Saeed Anwar and former Gloucestershire favourite Zaheer Abbas.

In 2007 Herschelle became the first player to hit six sixes in an over in One-Day International cricket, doing so against the Netherlands in the World Cup. His long career at top level has included spells in county cricket with Glamorgan, Yorkshire and Durham.
