Smith Efforts Not Enough At New Road

7 July 2013

Some impressive bowling by loan signing Tom Smith was not enough to save Gloucestershire from a five-wicket Friends Life t20 defeat by Worcestershire at New Road.

The loan signing from Middlesex took 2-22 from four overs with his left-arm spin after the visitors had been restricted to 119-9 batting first, Hamish Marshall top-scoring with only 23.

Despite Smith's economical spell, Worcestershire reached their modest target with five overs to spare and inflicted on Gloucestershire their third defeat in four FLt20 games.

After some sparkling batting in the narrow defeat by Somerset on Friday, Michael Klinger and his team were unable to build any momentum from an opening stand of 27 in 3.1 overs

They crumbled to 79-7 before Smith (13 not out) and Gareth Roderick (12) at least ensured a three-figure total. Worcestershire skipper Daryl Mitchell claimed 3-21 and there were two wickets each for Jack Shantry and Moeen Ali.

Gloucestershire's bowlers did their best to make a contest of it and had the home side 93-5 at one stage before Alexei Kervezee's unbeaten 42 saw them to a comfortable win.
