Skipper Michael Is Player Of The Year

4 October 2013

Michael Klinger’s immense contribution in his first season as Gloucestershire captain was recognised at a packed Annual Awards Ceremony in the new Bristol Pavilion at the County Ground.

Mayor George Ferguson was guest of honour on a night when the performances of players from school age through to the first team were rewarded by the club.

Michael had already been presented with the Moreton C Cullimore Cup as Batsman-of-the-Year prior to his recent return to Australia.

In his absence, he was named Players’ Player-of-the-Year, having scored more than 1,000 runs in both first class and one-day cricket.  This award was sponsored by St Austell Brewery.

The Bowler-of-the-Year prize was awarded to Will Gidman, who claimed 55 first class victims, 50 of them in the LV=County Championship, despite being hampered by an ankle problem.  Will was presented with a Ship's Decanter, kindly donated by Bristol Blue Glass.

The Ray Parsons Award for Young Player-of-the-Year went to 19-year-old Craig Miles, who took 43 first class wickets during his breakthrough season into the first class game.

Miles Hammond collected the Collis Cup for Academy Player-of-the-year. During the summer off-spinner Miles, 17, played first team cricket in all three domestic competitions, while also representing England Under-19s, as he will do again this winter.

The following individual performances were recognised:

Maiden First Class Hundred : Gareth Roderick 152 not out v Kent at Canterbury.

Outstanding Performance: Will Gidman for taking 10-43 against Leicestershire at Bristol and scoring 143 runs in the same match – both career-bests.

Champagne Moment : James Fuller for his hat-trick against Worcestershire at Cheltenham. Tom Smith also took a hat-trick against Somerset at Bristol.

In the absence of Michael Klinger, vice-captain Hamish Marshall gave an overview of the first team's season after highlights had been watched on a large screen,

He said: "In many ways it was a season of might-have-beens. We played some outstanding cricket at times, but couldn't maintain it for long enough to achieve our targets.

"We played some of our best cricket in the 40-over competition, but lost a couple of games at the end of the group stage and just failed to qualify."

Hamish paid tribute to Michael Klinger, saying: "In addition to his runs, Michael's professionalism and dedication were outstanding.

"He is a top fella and we are all looking forward to having him back next year."

Mayor Ferguson said: "We are here in the Bristol Pavilion at the Bristol County Ground encouraging young people to do something really worthwhile.

"This is the only provider of international sport in the city and I want to see more. The match against India next season will be a great event for Bristol."
