Self-Belief Is The Difference - Dawson

6 July 2012

Richard Dawson believes Gloucestershire will go into their final Friends Life t20 match with Northamptonshire at Northampton on Sunday full of confidence.

And the club's Twenty20 coach inisists that is the difference which has made the team more competitive in the shortest format of the game this season.

Dawson has overseen resounding victories over Somerset and Worcestershire, which have catapaulted Gloucestershire into the battle for quarter-final qualification.

The abandonment of Friday night's Midlands/Wales/West Division match against Warwickshire at Edgbaston left them on ten points and a win at Northants could see the club into the last eight for the first time since 2007.

Richard told this website: "We have worked as hard on the mental side of the game as the physical because we had to convince the players of their potential.

"They now believe they can play T20 cricket and take on the best teams. We have a lot of young lads and they need filling with belief in their own ability.

"When they do something well we try to re-enforce it, We have also given each individual a clear role in the side and they have responded to that.

"I have never been one to look at tables so I'm not sure of the exact position. Whatever happens now there have been signs of clear progress and that was the main aim from the start.

"We are building for the future and the lads have clearly demonstrated the potential we know they possess."

Skipper Hamish Marshall, who has been in top form, is looking for the team to continue the winning run against Northants.

He said: "I've always maintained that T20 is a momentum game. We have some now and it's important that we don't let the standards we have set for ourselves slip.

"It's a very exciting end to the group and we have given ourselves a chance."
