11 April 2025

Everyone at Gloucestershire County Cricket Club would like to congratulate Sean Williams on 25 years as Head Groundsperson at the Seat Unique Stadium.

Before the start of day one of Gloucestershire’s fixture with Glamorgan in the County Championship on Friday 11 June, Sean was presented with a ceremonial Gloucestershire cap.

On receiving the commemorative county cap from Mark Alleyne in the team huddle, Sean said:

"I had a tear in my eye this morning.

"To receive it from Mark Alleyne, who was winning trophies as captain back when I started as Head Groundsperson, was really special.

"Preparing wickets for Gloucestershire has always been a team effort. The guys work incredibly hard, and this is reward for them as well as me."

Over the past 25 years, much has changed around the ground, but the one constant has been Sean preparing pitches, trimming outfields and ensuring elite-level cricket takes place.

During Sean’s time as Head Groundsperson, Glos have won several major white-ball trophies, including three C&G Trophy successes in the early 2000s, the Benson & Hedges Cup in 2000, the Royal London 50-over competition in 2015 and most recently the Vitality Blast last season.

In that time Sean has prepared the playing surface for thirteen different international teams as well as some of the games legends such as Muttiah Muralitharan, Sachin Tendulkar, Jimmy Anderson, Joe Root and many more.

Sean has also prepared wickets for both the Women’s and Men’s ICC 50-over World Cups and 46 international wickets including Bristol’s first ever Test Match in 2021 when England Women faced India.

Chief Executive at Gloucestershire Cricket, Neil Priscott, said:

“We are thrilled to present Sean with a special county cap to commemorate his 25 years as Head Groundsperson at the Club. It’s an incredible achievement and Sean can be proud of his record in the game.

"He is widely known on the circuit as someone who excels at developing talent and bringing people into the industry, and there are many people around the country who have benefited from Sean’s expertise and guidance over the years. A popular member of staff, we felt this was an appropriate way of celebrating this impressive milestone.”

Thank you, Sean!
