Hundreds of pupils pack in for Gloucestershire Schools' Day

19 June 2014

More than 800 pupils will pack into the Bristol County Ground on Monday June 23 for Gloucestershire Cricket’s first ever schools’ day.

The children – who are coming from 20 different primary schools spread around the county – are being given free entry to the third day of Gloucestershire’s LV County Championship against Glamorgan.

They will also have the chance to take part in a coaching session run by coaches from the Gloucestershire Cricket Board (GCB) on the outfield during the lunchtime interval.

Gloucestershire CCC marketing manager Emily Salvidge said: “It is fantastic to have so many children coming along to the match on Monday. We hope they will have a day to remember and it will encourage them to develop a lifelong affection for Gloucestershire Cricket.”

As well as watching the cricket the pupils will be given a workbook filled with a wide range of cricket-related tasks.

These include everything from designing a new Gloucestershire mascot to working out which of the county’s current batsmen has the best average.

Other challenges include planning a healthy meal for a cricketer and writing a poem about their day’s experience.

Gloucestershire Cricket Board chief executive Steve Silk said: “The schools’ day is designed to spark the children’s interest in both Gloucestershire Cricket and the game as a whole. We have tried to ensure that as well as giving pupils the chance to watch top class cricket for free, we can also support the work they are doing in school. Our workbooks tie cricket in with the National Curriculum and the coaching on the outfield at lunch should be an incredible sight.”

Gloucestershire are also holding a schools’ day at the Cheltenham Festival on July 15.
