Saxelby And Fuller Share Six Wickets

5 April 2012

Ian Saxelby and James Fuller took three wickets each as Gloucestershire bowled out Essex for 364 on the opening day of the LV County Championship match at Chelmsford.

Saxelby finished with 3-76 and Fuller 3-86. The hosts were 304-5 at one stage, but Gloucestershire's bowlers stuck to their task and eventually pegged them back.

Opener Billy Godleman was the hero for Essex with 130 off 243 balls. His innings featured 16 fours and a six and the total was 358 when he was eighth man out.

David Payne missed out on selection for Gloucestershire because of a knee injury, which flared up yesterday.

At the close of play, skipper Alex Gidman told this website: "There were a few nerves in the morning session and we didn't bowl as well as we could have done with the new ball.

"Godleman played very well because he probably faced the best deliveries we sent down and still managed to hit a century.

"The bowlers would admit that they weren't at their best, but they stuck at it. Ed Young did a really good containing job for us when the ball wasn't doing much in the afternoon session.

"It was very cold and in the end we clawed our way back into the game. Now we will need to bat well, particularly tomorrow morning when the ball is new."
