Roderick set for Championship debut

21 May 2013

Gloucestershire will give a County Championship debut to wicketkeeper Gareth Roderick in the Division Two match with Worcestershire, which starts at New Road on Wednesday.

Roderick played in the victory against Cambridge MCCU last week and will continue to deputise for Cameron Herring, who was ruled out of contention after being ill.

Gloucestershire captain Michael Klinger said: "Cameron trained lightly today, but he is not 100 per cent and it's not worth the risk playing him at Worcester. Gareth did well against Cambridge and deserves his opportunity."

Gloucestershire have included two spinners, Ed Young and Jack Taylor, in a 13-man squad and may well play both at a New Road ground which has assisted slow bowling this season, following flooding there in the winter.

Ian Cockbain has been added to the squad as cover for Alex Gidman, who hurt his shoulder during Sunday's Yorkshire Bank 40 victory against Glamorgan at the SWALEC Stadium. However, he is expected to play at New Road.

Gloucestershire will again be without all-rounder Will Gidman, who is not quite ready to return from an ankle injury. Fellow strike bowler Ian Saxelby has also been given more time to regain full fitness from his shoulder injury, even though he played in the win against Cambridge MCCU.

Gloucestershire (from): Klinger (capt), Dent, Housego, A Gidman, Howell, Marshall, Roderick (wkt), Cockbain, Young, Taylor, Fuller, Miles, Norwell.
