Primary school pupil gets to see winning car design unveiled at the Brewin Dolphin Cheltenham Cricket Festival
24 July 2014
This weekend, primary school pupil Tom Lumley saw his Cheltenham Cricket Festival-inspired design immortalised on a smart car after winning the competition of a lifetime.
The 10 year-old from St John’s C of E Primary, Cheltenham was awarded his first prizes of a junior membership, signed bat and shirt by Gloucestershire Captain Michael Klinger, before the team kicked off their NatWest T20 Blast match against Essex.
Tom’s family, head teacher, teacher and classmates from St John’s C of E Primary all watched as he pulled the sheet from the car to reveal his winning design.
The competition runner-up, 11 year-old Aida Ferre-Dyevre, also from St John’s C of E Primary was presented with a signed Gloucestershire Cricket shirt and bat.
More than 120 children entered the competition, with the winner being chosen from a shortlist of 10 by a judging panel made up of Gloucestershire Captain Michael Klinger, the Club’s Chief Executive Will Brown and Steve Lyons, Divisional Sales Director from Sytner Mercedes-Benz.
On winning the competition Tom said: “I was really surprised to win. I like cricket and used to play it a while ago but to be honest, football is more my sport. But, now I’ve won this competition where part of the prize is a coaching session for our school from Gloucestershire Cricket, I might take up the sport again.”
“We were so pleased Tom won the competition.” teacher Matt Allison told us. “Not only because it was great for Tom, but because we were able to take the children to see a really exciting T20 where Gloucestershire beat top of the table Essex in a thrilling match. Hopefully it might inspire some of them to take up the game.”
