Players hand out awards to Glos stars of the future

27 September 2016

The Gloucestershire professional squad joined more than 300 people to celebrate the next generation of county stars at the annual junior awards evening.

Players including skipper Gareth Roderick handed out trophies to the outstanding age group players of 2016 while Ian Cockbain and Benny Howell took part in an on-stage question and answer session.

Guests also listened to a recap of the season for each of the 12 boys and girls teams, including the under 11 girls who had a 100% record in 2016 and the under 13 and 14 boys squads who won their respective Taunton Festivals.

Speaking at the presentation evening – which was held at the Brightside Ground – Gloucestershire Cricket Board (GCB) head of performance Tim Hancock said: “It has been another excellent season for Gloucestershire’s county age groups and the future looks very bright indeed.”

Tim paid tribute to the growing number of former junior players who have graduated into the first team. These include 19-year-olds George Hankins who made his maiden First Class earlier this month, Patrick Grieshaber who made his one-day and T20 debuts this season and James Bracey who made his debut in the last match of the season against Sussex.

He said: “It is fantastic to see players who were in our age group squads a couple of years ago, going on to represent Gloucestershire. We are very proud of their achievements and I am sure there are a number of other players in this room who, if they continue to work hard, will follow in their footsteps.”

The audience also heard about the GCB’s first ever tour to Sri Lanka, which took place in February, and recognised the achievement of Under 15 duo Matt Brewer (Bristol CC) and Joe Dryell (Downend CC) who both represented the South West at this year’s prestigious Bunbury Festival.

Danielle Gibson was the only player to receive two awards on the night. She picked up the Under 15 girls Performance of the Year for her score of 129 off 66 balls v Wiltshire and took home the Under 17 Player of the Year trophy for scoring 486 runs at an average of 44 and taking 15 wickets at an average of 18.

Danielle was one of six players from Dumbleton CC to receive awards – the most from any club.
