PLAYER BLOG: Payne, surgery or not?

27 January 2017

Happy new year to everyone, I hope you all enjoyed a good Christmas and New Year.

This winter has been a battle for me, and it began like no other. I came in to this winter facing a decision I have never had to face before. Go under the knife, or not?

When we returned to training in November 2015, I had a chat with our physio Steve Griffin, about a problem I was having with my knee. We worked very hard throughout the 2015/16 winter to try and get my knee back to feeling 100%. Unfortunately, we did not achieve this and in February 2016 we had it scanned to see what the problem was.

The specialist found a minor issue that he believed was not urgent enough to require immediate attention. So we made the decision to take on the season, and try and get me through it. We succeeded in doing this, however, the problem was still there. This meant that at the end of September it needed to be scanned again, to see where it was at.

A week or so later I received a call from 'Griff' with the news: The knee specialist had recommended surgery. It was a daunting decision for me, as I'm sure it is for anyone who has to face this choice. Made even more difficult having just been told it could leave me on crutches for potentially 2 weeks, and me and my partner had just got a dog about a month before!

However, having felt how strenuous it was fodavid-payne-surgeryr me to get through last season, it was a no brainer in the end, surgery it was.

I had the surgery in early November, and it was a huge success right from the off. From waking up at about 4.00pm, I was up, walking, and on my way home by about 8.00pm that evening. Plus I got the go ahead that I would be able to walk the dog the next day!
