PLAYER BLOG: Hankins on life down under

17 February 2017

I am glad to say that I have extended my contract with Gloucestershire until the end of the 2019 season.  For me there was no doubt in what I wanted to do and that was to stay at this amazing club which has so much potential for the future.

My first year as a professional was a great year for me, with both up’s and down’s.
Having been at Gloucestershire since U16 level it’s been my ambition to make my First Class debut.  Achieving my ambition last year - when I stepped onto the field against Worcestershire - is a moment I will remember for the rest of my life.

Receiving my England U19 Test and ODI Caps last summer were two things that I’ll remember fondly; especially receiving my ODI Cap from England legend Andrew Strauss. Playing against Sri Lanka in the Test and ODI series proved to be a different challenge, as well as a great experience.  To have been awarded 'Player of the Series' for the ODI’s was also a massive moment, especially as the Sri Lanka coach chose me for the award.

This winter I have been back 'down under' working with the Darren Lehmann Academy. For a couple of days a week I have been coached by Johan Botha and Mark Cosgrove; training twice a week with my Club Glenelg DCC and playing for them on a Saturday.  The weather hasn't been as warm as you would think and a few games have been washed out because of rain, so it has been a bit like an English summer!

Over the Christmas period I spent time in Brisbane with my Uncle to celebrate Christmas and over New Year I was in Sydney with a some of my English mates celebrating with them.

For the last month I have been working hard on my skills and fitness ahead of the new 2017 season.  I can’t wait to hit the ground running when I get back at the end of February where I will be straight into the marquee with the boys getting ready for a great season with Gloucestershire.

I’ll look forward to seeing you all at the Brightside Ground for the upcoming season where hopefully we can bring success and silverware back to Bristol.
