30 September 2024
Gloucestershire Cricket is saddened to announce the death of former player Philip Thorn, who passed away at St Peter's Hospice in Bristol surrounded by family on Saturday at the age of 72.
Born in St George, Bristol, Thorn made his Gloucestershire debut in 1974, playing four first-class matches in that season scoring 45 runs and taking four wickets. His only List A appearance for the Club came in the same season against Lancashire in the John Player League.
Following his time at Gloucestershire, Thorn played National County cricket for Wiltshire and Herefordshire, stretching from 1980 to 1997.
An icon of amateur cricket in Gloucestershire, the left-arm spinner continued playing for over 60 years, last featuring for Old Bristolians Westbury, the Club in which he was President, in the 2023 season. He also represented Gloucestershire over 60s consistently over the last decade.
You can read more about Thorn's incredible contribution to cricket in the county on the Gloucestershire Cricket Foundation website, here.
Details regarding Philip's funeral so those close to him can celebrate his life will be detailed in due course.
Everyone at Gloucestershire sends our thoughts to Philip's family, friends and everyone who knew him at this difficult time.
