Phil ‘The Colonel’ Mustard signs a two-year contract

4 October 2016

Gloucestershire Cricket is delighted to announce that Phil Mustard has signed for the Club on a permanent basis following a summer loan signing from Durham.

‘The Colonel,’ as he is affectionately known, joined Gloucestershire in July as cover for Gareth Roderick after the Club’s four-day Captain broke his finger.  Mustard, 33, made his home debut against Middlesex at the Brightside Ground on 29 July; a match that saw Gloucestershire take a four wicket win to claim a T20 quarter final slot over (ironically) Durham.

A destructive left handed batsman - and a safe pair of hands behind the stumps - Mustard was previously compared with Australian great Adam Gilchrist during his early career.

Durham born and bred he spent 16 years with his home county, scoring more than 7000 runs in 185 First Class appearances.  He also captained Durham and played a key role in each of their three County Championship winning sides.  He made his International debut in 2007 against Sri Lanka and represented England on 12 occasions.

Commenting on his two-year deal, Phil Mustard said:  “Gloucestershire gave me the opportunity to play red ball cricket this summer and it was fair to give them the first shot at putting a contract on the table.

“What I saw in the team during the five weeks I spent on loan was very pleasing and I believe Gloucestershire as a Club can go on and win another trophy next season and I'm really looking forward to starting this new chapter in my career.”

Gloucestershire Chief Executive, Will Brown, added:  “We are delighted to have Phil join us for the next couple of seasons.  He has always been a consistent performer across all formats and proved that with the contributions he made to our County Championship cricket towards the end of the season.  His experience, both on the International and domestic circuit, will also help greatly in the changing room and in continuing to develop our ever-improving squad.”
