Perfect Ten10
31 July 2014
Gloucestershire Cricket chief executive Will Brown says he hopes the Cheltenham Festival Ten10 Summer Smash will become a regular event following the success of the inaugural competition.
The tournament was won by a Gloucestershire Cricket Board ‘dream team’ who were crowned champions after winning all of their matches.
The side (pictured above) – which was made up of 11 of the county’s best club cricketers– beat a squad put together by festival sponsors Brewin Dolphin in the final having earlier triumphed over a Gloucestershire Old Boys XI and a team from Gloucester Rugby (see below for team photos).
The day proved a big success with supporters delighting in watching former heroes including Mark Alleyne and Sadiq Mohammed (pictured below with Steve Kirby) do battle with Cherry and Whites rugby stars and Gloucestershire’s top amateur players.
Will - who came up with the idea of putting on the 10-overs-a-side contest - said he hoped the event would become a regular fixture in the Cheltenham Cricket Festival calendar.
He said: “The day was enjoyed by supporters and players alike and I hope it will become part of the festival tradition moving forward.
“Congratulations to the GCB team who proved a cut above the rest on the day. The county’s clubs are the lifeblood of cricket in Gloucestershire and it was great to be able to give some of our top recreational players a stage to showcase their talent.”
One of the highlights of the day for fans was the unique spectacle of a team of Gloucester Rugby greats swapping codes to try their hand at cricket.
Their team included Samoan centre Terry Fanolua (pictured above), legendary prop Andy Deacon and fullback Chris Catling. The Brewin Dolphin team also featured another star of the oval ball in former Springbok Thinus Delport (see pic below).
Other eye-catching names taking part included ex-Gloucestershire players Steve Kirby, Tony Wright (pictured below left) and Andy Stovold (Old Boys XI) and Richard Graham MP (Gloucester Rugby) (pictured below right).
Will said: “The day was designed to be a bit of fun for spectators but hopefully it has also helped us to forge closer links with Gloucester Rugby and their supporters as well as festival sponsors Brewin Dolphin.
“It was also wonderful to see the Gloucestershire Old Boys playing at the College Ground again. They certainly proved the old adage that form is temporary and class is permanent.”
Gloucestershire Cricket Board chief executive Steve Silk added: “It was a great event and provided a really good advert for recreational cricket. There were players out there from all different ages and backgrounds from ex-internationals to club and occasional players which all added to the spectacle.
“Speaking to the GCB players they had a day to remember and said that they felt that it had also brought them closer to the county club which is a great legacy.”
