Payne On Hat-Trick As Bowlers Dominate

20 April 2014

David Payne will start the second day of the LV=County Championship game with Glamorgan at Cardiff on a hat-trick after an excellent start by Gloucestershire.

Only 19.4 overs were possible because of rain on day one after Michael Klinger had won the toss. But they saw the hosts reduced to 47-6.

Payne took three of the wickets, including those of Murray Goodwin and Mark Wallace with successive balls to complete figures of 3-14 off 4.4 overs.

After Wallace had fallen lbw the players were forced to leave the field. So tomorrow’s play will start with a potential hat-trick delivery.

Will Gidman made the early inroads for Gloucestershire in heavily overcast conditions. The all-rounder set the tone by having opener Gareth Rees caught behind by Cameron Herring off the first ball of the match.

It was 18-2 when Stewart Walters fell lbw for four to Gidman, whose seven overs saw him concede only nine runs.

That became 33-3 as Matt Taylor (1-16) got in on the act by having Will Bragg caught in the slips by Klinger for 25.

Three runs later Payne struck for the first time, bowling the dangerous Jacques Rudolph for four.

The two wickets with successive deliveries came in the 20th over with the match 90 minutes old. Despite brief hopes of a resumption at 4.10pm the rain returned and the umpires called off play for the day at 5.45pm.

Jim Allenby was five not out, with Graham Wagg set to be his new partner.

Gloucestershire named the same team as for the opening Championship fixtures against Hampshire at Bristol, with Ian Saxelby again 12th man.
