Payne And Norwell Strike Twice On Tough Day
21 August 2013
David Payne (pictured) and Liam Norwell claimed two wickets each, but Gloucestershire's bowlers failed to cash in on a promising start to the LV=County Championship match with Kent at Canterbury.
When Norwell took his first wicket to send back Brendan Nash for 14, the hosts looked in trouble at 46-3.
But then Rob Key (53), Ben Harmison (106) and Darren Stevens (98 not out) turned fortunes in Kent's favour to such an extent that they closed on 334-6.
Norwell finally had Harmison caught behind by Gareth Roderick and Payne picked up the wickets of Daniel Bell-Drummond and Geraint Jones, but it was a disappointing outcome to the opening day of a game Gloucestershire need to win to put pressure on the Second Division leaders.
Payne ended the day with 2-79 from 22 overs and Norwell 2-78 from 16 overs.
Will Gidman sent down 23 overs for just 47 runs, having sent back opener Sam Northeast for a duck.
But a stand of 133 in 30.1 overs between Key and Harmison for the fifth wicket proved the turning point.
