Now We Need That Bit Extra - Payne

7 August 2014

David Payne believes Gloucestershire will need to add an extra 20 per cent to their game to extend a three-match winning streak in the Royal London One-Day Cup with victory over Essex at Chelmsford tomorrow.

The match, which starts at 2pm, offers the chance to take another major step towards the quarter-finals following consecutive successes against Yorkshire, Hampshire and Leicestershire, which put the team top of Group A.

But Payne, who hit top form in taking the first four wickets against Leicestershire on Tuesday and has happy memories of the Chelmsford ground, believes Essex will provide the toughest test so far.

He told this website: “They are always very hard to beat on their own ground and I don’t think we have a great record there.

“We have made a good start to the Royal London Cup and certainly don’t want to take our foot off the pedal now.

“But we have been 20 per cent down on where we could be in terms of performances and there is a lot more to come from our batting.

“That bodes well for us because when we are firing on all cylinders we will be a match for anyone. We need to step up our game now if we are to beat Essex.”

It was at Chelmsford in 2010 that David recorded the best one-day figures ever by a Gloucestershire bowler, taking 7-29 in a Clydesdale Bank 40 match.

That included four wickets with successive balls and six in nine deliveries, a contribution he will never forget.

But David pointed out: “We still lost the game. I’d certainly settle for the same figures this time! But the most important thing is that the team come away with another win.”
