Norwell Routs Students In Innings Win

16 May 2013

Liam Norwell finished with match figures of 9-41 as Gloucestershire completed a two-day victory over Cambridge MCCU at Fenner's by an innings and 82 runs.

Starting the second day of the three-day fixture on 46-3 in their first innings, the students were bowled out for just 98 in 35.3 overs, a deficit of 244.

Norwell claimed 4-20 and there were two wickets each for James Fuller, Ian Saxelby and Matt Taylor as the seamers dominated.

Hamish Marshall enforced the follow-on and this time Cambridge MCCU were dismissed for 162, Norwell returning 5-21 and Ed Young 2-42.

Amit Gupta hit a half-century for the hosts, but the game ended around 4.30pm, giving Gloucestershire's players an unexpected day off tomorrow.

After the game Hamish Marshall told this website: "It was a really good win for us. All the seamers ran in hard and got their rewards.

"Liam got a bit out of the pitch in both innings and didn't hold back. As far as I am aware all the bowlers came through unscathed.

"It was great for Ian Saxelby to play a match after a lot of time in the nets building up his fitness.

"Alex Gidman set the game up for us with his first innings century. He had to be careful to start with because we had lost a few wickets, but then opened his shoulders.

"I was out just short of a ton, but it didn't worry me too much as I was going for quick runs as we looked for a declaration.

"We will now have a day off tomorrow and then be in for practice on Saturday ahead of the YB40 game at Cardiff on Sunday."
