Norwell Out Of Leicestershire Game

29 April 2013

Liam Norwell has become the fourth Gloucestershire bowler sidelined by injury with the new season less than three weeks old.

The 21-year-old seamer strained a groin muscle during the LV=County Championship match with Northamptonshire at Bristol and has been left out of a s squad of 12 for the away game with Leicestershire, which starts on Tuesday.

Liam joins Ian Saxelby (shoulder), Paul Muchall (knee) and James Fuller (broken finger) on the injured list. But there is better news of Benny Howell, who was struck on a hand while batting against Northants and didn't field on the final day.

He has been selected in the squad for the Leicestershire game and is expected to be fit to keep his place in the side.

Craig Miles, who was 12th man against Northants, could replace Norwell if Gloucestershire opt for a seamer, while Ed Young is in the squad as an extra spin option.

Skipper Michael Klinger told this website: "Luck has certainly been against us as far as injuries are concerned and to find ourselves quite a few players down already is frustrating."

"Liam hurt his groin bowling in the first innings against Northants. We don't think it is too bad, but it something we need to monitor.

"It's never ideal to have key players injured, but it means a chance for other members of our squad to show what they can do."

Leicestershire go into the game having been beaten by Leeds/Bradford MCCU in their last match, but Michael is warning not to read too much into that result.

"They didn't have their strongest team out and we certainly won't be thinking it will be an easy game because they lost to a university side.

"We will go there with the aim of trying to control the game from the start, which will always be the case. They have some good players so it is certain to be a tough contest.
