No Regrets As Yorkshire Scrape Home

31 August 2012

Hamish Marshall had no regrets about offering Yorkshire a last day target after Gloucestershire's suffered a two-wicket defeat in the LV=County Championship match at Scarborough.

With so much rain on the first three days, the captains had to contrive a finish. It provided some entertaining cricket for the Festival crowd, but ended with Anthony McGrath (76 not out) leading Yorkshire to victory.

Yorkshire declared their first innings on 61-2 and then threw up some declaration bowling in the shape of Adam Lyth and Andrew Gale to feed Gloucestershire runs.

Benny Howell (83 not out) and Rob Nicol (75 not out) filled their boots before Marshall declared on 159 for no wicket off just ten overs.

That set Yorkshire 314 to win and they got home thanks largely to Phil Jaques, who hit 79, and important contributions from Lyth (40) and Joe Root (43) before McGrath hit the winning runs.

There were two wickets each for Will Gidman, Liam Norwell and Jack Taylor as the game went down to the wire, Yorkshire closing on 316-8.

Afterwards Hamish told this website: "We wanted a decent last day's cricket and it is never enjoyable just playing out for a draw.

"In the end we came out just on the wrong side of a great game. Yorkshire won with two overs to spare and we had them under pressure with some good bowling at times.

"Jack Taylor bowled some really classy off-spin to pick up his two wickets and it took a fine effort from Anthony McGrath to hold Yorkshire together in the end.

"It was more good experience for our young players and now we look forward to our final home game against Northants next week."
