21 September 2012

Gloucestershire County Cricket Club is pleased to announce the signing of two hugely promising young wicketkeepers, Gareth Roderick and Cameron Herring.

Gareth Roderick, 21, has signed a two-year contract following a prolific season with Cheltenham in the West of England Premier League, which saw him score well over 1,000 runs.

Durban-born Gareth has also featured in Gloucestershire’s second XI and boasts a first class batting average of 37.66 from 12 matches played for KwaZulu-Natal in his native South Africa.

Cameron Herring, 17, from Tredegar, has been awarded a one-year scholarship followed by a two-year professional contract.

He joined Gloucestershire’s Academy last summer after impressing in club cricket in Wales, including an innings of 196 for Newport against Swansea.

Director of Cricket, John Bracewell, said: “Gareth Roderick has batted exceptionally well, not only for our second team, but in club cricket this season.

“With Jon Batty leaving us, we need competition for Richard Coughtrie behind the stumps next summer and believe Gareth is capable of providing it.”

Academy Director, Owen Dawkins, said: “Cameron Herring worked on his wicket keeping last winter under the guidance of Jack Russell and has kept for us in second XI and Academy fixtures this season.

“We are looking to send him abroad this winter to gain experience of different conditions.”

Cameron was named in the first team squad for the final LV=County Championship home game of the season against Northamptonshire and fielded as a substitute in the 207-run victory.
