Miles Helps England To Third Place
28 February 2014
Miles Hammond claimed an important wicket to help England to a thrilling win over Australia and a successful end to their Under-19 World Cup campaign.
The match to decide third and fourth place in the competition was played in Dubai and saw Australia run up 246-7 from their 50 overs after winning the toss.
Miles struck an important blow with his off-spin by having number three batsman Damien Mortmer caught behind by wicketkeeper Joe Clarke for two.
The young Gloucestershire bowler went on to bowl his eight overs for 41 runs, an economy rate of 5.12.
England were then indebted to a century from Northamptonshire’s Ben Duckett as they reached 247-9 with just two balls to spare.
Miles was dismissed for three in the closing stages, but was soon able to share in the celebrations with his team-mates after last pair Josh Shaw and Matthew Fisher had put together an unbroken stand of 34 in just 21 balls.
