Michael Leads Western Australia To Trophy Win
27 October 2014
Michael Klinger has become a trophy winner in Australia with his new club Western Australia.
Gloucestershire’s skipper top-scored for his side with 96 as the Warriors beat New South Wales Blues by 64 runs in Sydney to win the Matador Cup, the domestic List A competition down under.
The victory ended a ten-year wait for a one-day trophy for Western Australia, who posted 255-6 off their 50 overs.
Michael was denied a century when dismissed in the final over thanks to a stunning outfield catch from New South Wales fast-bowler Pat Cummins.
The Gloucestershire player only moved to Western Australia from South Australia this year.
At 125-2 New South Wales seemed on course to overtake their opponents and win the cup following a century partnership between Shane Watson and Kurtis Patterson.
However, the Western Australia attack, led by Jason Behrendorff (5-27), remained disciplined throughout the innings.
Test all-rounder Watson top-scored for New South Wales with a chanceless 83 off 100 balls, including three sixes, in just his second match back from a five-month injury lay-off.
But they were eventually bowled out for 191 in the 45th over.
