Michael Klinger pleased with gutsy display

26 April 2013

New Gloucestershire captain Michael Klinger said he was happy with a gutsy batting performance from his side against Northamptonshire at Bristol today, although the visitors look to be closing in on victory in the Division Two match.

Gloucestershire, trailing by 212 on first innings, reached 280-9 at stumps and hold a lead of 68. Alex Gidman (87), Benny Howell (53), Chris Dent (50) and Cameron Herring (32) all made useful contributions, as did Jack Taylor, who ended the day unbeaten on 30.

Klinger told this website: "It was a gutsy performance without actually nailing the day. We set out to win the day, but in the end it was probably evens. And, obviously in the context of the game, they are far ahead. We'll see what lead we can get in the morning and see where we are at.

"I think over the three days there have been some critical moments which we haven't quite grabbed. We should have scored a few more runs and we could have restricted them to 60 or 70 less.

"Today, we had some good partnerships, but couldn't get one of more than 100. But there were some gutsy innings and I thought a real mature one from Benny Howell. He played the role for the team that we needed, so I was really happy with that.

"Obviously, you want guys to push on and get really big scores, but if you look at their innings, they had a number of guys who didn't go on to get a big score. It's those sort of conditions on this wicket, because you never feel 100 per cent in."
