Match preview: Surrey v Gloucestershire
30 May 2022
Gloucestershire will make the trip to South London to take on Surrey in their third Vitality Blast fixture of the season on Tuesday evening.
The match at The Oval tomorrow night comes just a few days after Gloucestershire secured a much-needed and deserved first win of the season on Friday evening. The Shire beat Sussex Sharks by 41 runs under the floodlights at the Seat Unique Stadium in Bristol, a match that saw James Bracey score a career best T20 innings with 70 runs from 45 balls.
David Payne also starred for Glos with bowling figures of 3-22, as did Paul van Meekeren and Naseem Shah who took a brace of wickets each. The comfortable victory means Gloucestershire sit third in the table in the Vitality Blast South Group ahead of the match against fourth-placed Surrey. The hosts have only played one match in the Blast so far, compared to Gloucestershire’s two, an away trip to Glamorgan that saw Surrey claim a four-wicket victory.
Spear-headed by the likes of captain Chris Jordan, Jason Roy and Sam Curran, Surrey will be looking to make it two wins from two but will face tough competition from Gloucestershire’s in-form bowling attack.
Ollie Pope scored the bulk of the runs for Surrey against Glamorgan with 62 of his side’s 174-run total. Meanwhile Reece Topley, Sam Curran, Dan Worrall, Jamie Overton and Sunil Narine took one wicket each.
24-year-old Pope will be unavailable to play against Gloucestershire, however, due to his call-up to the England Test squad.

Dale Benkenstein has made just the one change to the squad that beat Sussex Sharks for the trip to the capital, with Josh Shaw coming in to replace Zak Chappell.
The Shire are still without their injured Club captain Graeme van Buuren as well as batters Chris Dent and Ben Charlesworth, who are both still recovering from their respective foot injuries.
Gloucestershire squad to face Surrey:
Head-to-head
Total matches (T20 only): 14 Gloucestershire wins: 5 Surrey wins: 9
Gloucestershire lost their last meeting with Surrey by seven wickets with 10 balls remaining in July last year, but Chris Jordan’s side missed out on the quarter-finals of the 2021 Vitality Blast on net run rate. The Londoners finished on the same points as Hampshire in fourth place and just one point ahead of Gloucestershire in sixth place.
Surrey squad to face Gloucestershire:
C Jordan (c), G Atkinson, R Burns, J Clark, S Curran, L Evans, W Jacks, D Moriarty, S Narine, J Overton, K Pollard, J Roy, J Smith, R Topley, D Worrall.
