Match Preview: RL Cup heroes back in action against Glamorgan

21 September 2015

The newly-crowned Royal London One-Day Cup champions return to Championship action when they take on Glamorgan at the Bristol County Ground.

Nine of the Lord’s final heroes could be in action on Tuesday with only Michael Klinger (back in Australia) and Geraint Jones (retired) not in the 13 man squad.

Liam Norwell is still missing through injury but Craig Miles and long-term absentee Ian Cockbain are in contention for the final match of the season.

Gloucestershire are unbeaten in their last six Championship matches (won three, drawn three) and currently lie in sixth place in Division 2, seven points behind Tuesday’s visitors who are fifth.

With Northants just a point further ahead and facing leaders Surrey this week there is all to play for in the race to finish fourth.

Experienced batsman Hamish Marshall says the RL One-Day Cup triumph will help the squad improve across all formats going forward.

He said: “Any victory gives you confidence and winning the cup will give us a huge amount of confidence. Moving forward we’ve got to keep improving but it’s certainly a great platform to build on.”

Gloucestershire Squad: Will Tavare (c), Chris Dent, Ian Cockbain, Gareth Roderick(w), Hamish Marshall, Benny Howell, Kieran Noema-Barnett, Jack Taylor, Tom Smith, James Fuller, Craig Miles, David Payne, Tom Hampton.

Glamorgan

Glamorgan visit the Bristol County Ground on a seven game winless streak in four-day cricket.

And they have been dealt a blow in their hopes to bring it to an end with the news that wicketkeeper Mark Wallace will miss his first LV=County Championship match in 14 years after suffering a calf tear.

It ends a record-breaking run of 230 consecutive matches since being called up as a late replacement for Adrian Shaw against Kent in June 2001.

The 33-year-old’s absence means Glamorgan could hand a debut to 18-year-old Gareth Ansell – who went to prep school in Gloucestershire - or Alex Milton (19) who have both kept in the 2nd XI this season.

Kieran Bull and Ruaidhri Smith are also ruled out with injury but they will be boosted by the return of captain Jacques Rudolph who missed their last two matches against Northants to travel back to South Africa for the birth of his first child.

Glamorgan Squad (possible): Jacques Rudolph (c),  Jeremy Lawlor, James Kettleborough, David Lloyd, Colin Ingram, Chris Cooke, Aneurin Donald, Graham Wagg, Craig Meschede, Andrew Salter, Michael Hogan, Dewi Penrhyn Jones, Will Bragg, Gareth Ansell (w).

Allrounder Graham Wagg has been a consistent performer with both bat and ball for Glamorgan this summer and still has an outside chance of doing the double of taking 50 wickets and scoring 1000 runs.

He has taken 45 wickets at 34.88 – his best haul since joining Glamorgan in 2011 - and has made 814 runs at 37 including a top score of 200.
