Match Preview: Payne picked as 'one to watch' ahead of Derbyshire One-Dayer

28 July 2015

David Payne has been tipped as ‘one to watch’ in this year’s Royal London One Day Cup ahead of Gloucestershire’s first  home match in the  competition v Derbyshire Falcons on Wednesday.

England selector and former Test bowler Angus Fraser picked out the left arm seamer after he finished as the third highest wicket-taker in 2014.

The 24-year-old took 17 wickets at an average of 16.4 as Gloucestershire reached the quarter finals last term.

And he says the squad believe they can be successful in the 50 over format again this season.

He said: “We have players in our squad like Jack Taylor and Benny Howell that have come up playing in the aggressive way people keep talking about and we believe the Royal London One Day Cup is a competition we can do well in.”

Gloucestershire’s first match in this year’s RL Cup against Yorkshire at Scarborough was abandoned with the visitors 5-0 needing 228 to win – a target they were confident of chasing.

The total may have been less than those seen in the World Cup and record breaking England v  New Zealand One Day International series earlier this year but David believes that there will be a knock on effect from those two competitions.

He said: “It’s always been a format that I’ve found exciting. I can understand why people thought it was a bit formulaic and that it tended to slow down in the middle overs between the power play and the death but I think the World Cup and the England v New Zealand series has changed that perception.

“Teams have found a way to keep accelerating throughout the innings and 300 is now the norm and 400 is becoming more regular. I am sure we will see this pattern of high scoring cricket continue in the Royal London One-Day Cup which is great for the competition.”

David -  who has a career-best of 7-29 in One Day cricket (v Essex in the 2013 CB40) – admits that the more positive way many teams are now playing is making the bowler’s job increasingly difficult. But he says it is a challenge he looks forward to.

He said: “As a bowler it is becoming much more difficult. Economy rates are rising all the time and I think you just have to take some of it with a pinch of salt. You are always working with the coaches and the bowling unit to come up with plans and as long as you do your job I think you have to accept it if a batter gets away.”

Derbyshire Falcons

The Falcons have enjoyed a mixed start to the 2015 Royal London One-Day Cup, beating Somerset and losing to Yorkshire in two rain-affected games.

At Taunton, young seamer Ben Cotton took 3-11 to skittle the hosts for 74 and secure a 29 run Duckworth/Lewis win.

Derbyshire then suffered a seven run D/L defeat to Yorkshire despite a half century from Hamish Rutherford.

Wednesday’s visitors to the Bristol County Ground made the quarter finals of last year’s competition.

And speaking to the Derbyshire’s official website, their skipper Wayne Madsen (pictured) said the memories of 2014 would help boost them in the current campaign.

He said: “Having good memories of the competition gives you a lift and gives you the belief which is a massive part of the game.

“We started on minus two points last year and to qualify from that position was a great effort from the squad.

“We bowled four-day lengths and we were aggressive with that. With the bat we gave ourselves a chance with scoring big totals in quite a few matches.

“It’s crucial to get off to a good start, we showed that last year. If you get yourself ahead in this competition with two or three wins early doors it can make a massive difference.”

Squad (Possible)

Key Man

Hamish-Rutherford-celebra-008New Zealand opener Hamish Rutherford has proved a solid performer in all formats since becoming Derbyshire’s fifth overseas player of the year.

Since his arrival in June the 26-year-old has scored 273 runs at an average of 45 in the LV=County Championship and weighed in with more than 200 runs in the NatWest T20 Blast with a strike rate over 145.

He also made 56 off 48 balls in the Falcons Duckworth/Lewis defeat to Yorkshire in the Royal London One-Day Cup on Monday.

The son of former Black Cap batsman Ken Rutherford, Hamish has played 16 Tests, four ODIs and seven T20s for his country.
